We had a wonderful stay at Shangri-La Hambantota! The staff were exceptionally friendly, and our host, Dilmini, did a fantastic job ensuring everything went smoothly throughout our stay. We were pleasantly surprised with a complimentary upgrade to an Ocean View room, which was very spacious and well-equipped with excellent in-room amenities. The entire property was beautifully maintained, tidy and clean. The dinner buffet was definitely our favourite, and we felt that the buffets offered great value for money. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our experience and would highly recommend this hotel. We would love to visit again!
Although we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, there were a few areas for improvement. Despite having a large TV in the room, we were disappointed to find that it was not a Smart TV and did not have a cable TV connection. We were also surprised that bottled water was charged above the marked retail price (MRP), with additional taxes and service charges. Additionally, all the swimming pools were only around 4 feet deep, which may limit the experience for guests who prefer deeper pools. Addressing these points would make an already wonderful stay even better.

The hospitality is a different level, the hotel is kids friendly everywhere around the resort, the half board package is a must

This is a really lovely hotel for families. The staff are the biggest asset, they are so friendly & welcoming. We were welcomed warmly by Umesh & well cared for during our stay by Dilmini. I wanted to arrange a special dine by design dinner for my husband & Kapila was very accommodating & helpful in meeting all my requirements. The F&B staff were all so lovely from the waiting staff to the chefs etc. I have two young children & all the staff were so welcoming & friendly with them, chatting to them & playing with them. Thank you so much to all the staff 🙏🏻
Another highlight is how child friendly the hotel is - the kids club has a generous soft play section, which is probably the nicest we've seen in a kids club so far. Also plenty of opportunity for crafts & arts. We used their babysitting service for our two children & they were well cared for & very happy. Thank you to Dineshika & her colleague.
My children loved the water slides & I think the kids pool is one of the nicest I've seen in terms of size & depth so that it's easy for adults to spend time in there too with their children. The family pool is very generously sized as well.
We ate at the a la carte Sera restaurant during our stay & really enjoyed the quality & taste of our meal, would definitely recommend.
The entrance & lobby/reception area is so beautiful, peaceful & welcoming. I also enjoyed the traditional flute & drum welcome on arrival alongside the welcome prasad tradition.
Overall it was a lovely enjoyable family stay & I thank all the staff for making it special 🙏🏻
Not a criticism of the hotel but the actual beach itself is not particularly picturesque nor very usable. Perhaps it was the time of year of our visit but the water is grey & murky & the waves are very strong. The beach is also very grey & not the kind of beach I would choose to visit with my children. So if having a beautiful usable beach is an important part of the holiday then perhaps this location isn't right (during October at least, can't comment on other times of the year).
In terms of the hotel:
- whilst the kids club has good facilities it does seem to have a lot of wear & tear & could do with a good clean & sprucing up - lots of pencil/marker/paint marks everywhere which don't fit in with a 5* facility image
- the evening buffet meal was a disappointment, the traditional food offerings were probably the best items but the rest was disappointing, especially when compared to their a la carte restaurant, you can really tell the difference in the quality of the food. The patisserie/desserts however were lovely so I think the pastry department is doing a great job.
