Excellent stay and very helpful location information for self-drivers
We had a wonderful stay at Mara Leisure Camp in September 2026. Everything was excellent, and we would definitely recommend the camp. The location is particularly interesting, although we spent quite some time researching it beforehand, as it is not entirely clear whether the camp is inside or outside the Masai Mara National Reserve. This is important because of the daily park entrance fees.
Location and park entrance fees
Based on our experience in September 2026, the camp is physically located outside the Masai Mara National Reserve, north of the Talek River, which forms the boundary in this area. There is a foot bridge allowing you to cross the river and enter the reserve directly from the camp. However, you need to have valid park ticket to enter the reserve this way.
Alternatively, you can drive to Talek Gate, purchase your park ticket there each morning, and enter the reserve. On arrival and departure days, you can stay entirely outside the reserve without needing to purchase a park ticket.
Getting there by self-drive
We also spent a lot of time researching the road conditions before our trip. We travelled in a Toyota Passo and discovered two possible routes.
Google Maps directs you via Aitong along the C14 via Aitong. We took this route, and the drive took almost four hours. While it is certainly possible, even in a smaller vehicle, we would not particularly recommend it. The road is very demanding, with numerous potholes, stones and rough sections. We made it without any problems, but it requires patience and careful driving.
Our recommended alternative: the road via Sekenani and Talek
We strongly recommend taking the alternative road between Sekenani and Talek. As of September 2026, this road was not yet shown on Google Maps, although it was already available on Apple Maps.
Simply turn off before Sekenani Gate, follow the road across Mara Simba Bridge, and continue towards Talek. The journey takes approximately one hour.

PLEASE AVOID THIS PLACE IF YOU DON’T WANT TO HAVE PROBLEMS.
Unfortunately, we were charged for drinks that we did not consume. Another disappointing issue is that although the hotel advertises a buffet as included, not even drinking water is provided during lunch or dinner. All drinks, including water, have to be purchased separately. We also felt pressured by the staff to keep buying drinks during meals, which made the experience uncomfortable.
From the beginning, we were told that we would be able to see wildlife directly from the hotel. We stayed for five days and, unfortunately, we didn’t see any animals at all. The photos also appear to be AI-generated or heavily edited, because the reality was very different from what we expected based on what was advertised.

A little slice of luxury in the Mara.
We had a wonderful stay at Mara Leisure Camp, and the newly renovated tents genuinely exceeded our expectations. They are absolutely at par with some of the bigger luxury hotel camps, including JW Marriott-level standards.
Despite renovations being ongoing, the entire property was exceptionally clean and well maintained, and we experienced no inconvenience whatsoever. The new tents are beautiful, spacious and thoughtfully done, with breathtaking views. Having both hot water and AC in the tents was a huge plus, especially after long game drives.
The food was consistently great, and the packed breakfasts and lunches prepared for our game drives were also of a very good standard. Most of all, the staff were amazing — warm, attentive, accommodating and always willing to help.
A special mention to Julius Giulio, who oversaw our stay and bookings and went above and beyond to make sure everything was taken care of and that we had an excellent experience.

The location was great
We paid for a half day game drive but they took us for only one hour and a half. The driver was driving very fast and he couldn't stop for us to take photos. He couldn't also give us any knowledge about the animals. He only focused on driving. We asked him to take us where the other tourists were heading to watch the lions as they were spotted by other drivers but instead he told us that we can do that the next day. It was the worst safari ever considering being out first time there
