Amazing night in Gifu in a brillant hotel.

Probably the best Japanese experience from our holidays. Very nice staff, bedroom with view on the river was very calming and relaxing. Both onsens had inside and outside areas with views. I highly recommend this hotel.

This was our first ryokan experience, and it felt truly authentic. We were especially grateful that the chef adapted the entire dinner menu to be vegan for us. The food was exceptional, and the whole experience was wonderful. We would happily stay here again!

We won’t be recommending or returning

There were a couple of staff members who were helpful, especially the initial female staff member who showed us to our room. Her English was poor but she tried very hard to communicate what was needed. Free parking was convenient.

Ok, one of the worse stays in Japan on our trip. If you choose to stay here be aware that you MUST book your food service at time of booking. They do not have a general restaurant on site and will not accept bookings when you arrive, even if you are staying for a few days. If you don’t book dinner or breakfast be aware that food options around the hotel are non-existent. If you have a car you can drive a few kms into the larger town of Gifu to find food. If you don’t have transportation then you might be stuck eating sandwiches from the local Family Mart about 10min walk away. Breakfast was included in our stay and it was held in a large hall with trestle tables and a buffet selection of Japanese food. Not what I expected from an “old world” Japanese Ryokan. Not sure what is on offer for dinner as they claimed they were booked up for the two days we were staying there. Couldn’t even offer the meal to be served in our rooms if they had no tables available; so I guess it is another buffet style serving. I suspect this place is very much catering to the older Chinese tourists as buses of them arrived each day. Lunch is definitely not available at all. Other Japanese hotels we’ve stayed in on this trip have offered unlimited filtered water either in the room or from a dispenser in the hallway. We were given two small bottles of water for each day of our stay up front, but they didn’t explain this until we used up our ration and asked for more, only to be told we already had our allowance. So if you drink water be prepared to get water from a vending machine. Was surprised the lobby has two short flights of stairs to get to the elevator. Those with mobility issues be warned. No ramp available. Finally, and sadly I have to mention it, but the misogyny of the Japan of yesteryear was on full display here. Older men in suits standing around directing older female staff to do all the work, including lifting heavy suitcases up those stairs etc was disturbing.

Classy hotel in charming part of town with peaceful river view.

Classy hotel. Loved our traditional tatami room with river view. Peaceful environment. Fantastic hot spring onsen. Nice gift shop. Abundant delicious breakfast. Exceptional service. Charming old part of town. We have atayed here many times and look forward to the next.

The public bath was amazing. The staff was super helpful and friendly. The welcoming reception was fanominal. The breakfast was amazing. The staff made us aware of events taking place that evening. Easy bus access to and from location.

The air-conditioning was on a timer and would not allow us to stay cool. We were sweating all night 🌙.
