The Damai

The Damai is a little out of Lovina and that’s a good thing because it’s quiet and a bit cooler up the hill with fabulous views and a bit of a sea breeze. They’ll take you to Lovina and back anytime during the day so the distance disappears. The rooms are beautifully appointed, staff are incredibly friendly and helpful and the restaurant is outstanding (which it should be for the price but its menu is done by a Danish chef). Breakfast is sensational, large and lots of variety. My partner had a sore foot which made it difficult to walk the steps and slopes to our villa but the staff were always quick and happy to take her to and from in their electric buggy. There are lots of places to visit in central Bali on the way to and from Lovina too.

The coffee in the room was Balinese but a bit weak, a coffee maker would have been appreciated. A pretty minor thing.

After 16 days at The Damai near Lovina, we give it five stars, above all for the extraordinary care shown by its staff. The narrow approach reveals little of the lush, peaceful oasis awaiting you. From arrival, you feel genuinely welcome. Throughout our stay, everyone, from gardeners and housekeeping to the restaurant team, greeted us with warmth and smiles. You are recognised, remembered and looked after, with staff always ready to find a solution. Their kindness makes this place special. Breakfast was a daily pleasure: freshly prepared, beautifully cooked and varied, with international, Balinese and Asian choices. Room service was consistently tasty and well presented. Dinner also impressed us with excellent ingredients, skilful cooking and delicious flavours. Around four kilometres from Lovina, the hotel offers tranquillity and a convenient shuttle. We arranged a private car into town and sent a WhatsApp message when ready to return, usually waiting about 15 minutes. During our stay, it was free until 6 pm; afterwards, a return journey cost IDR 100,000. The villas offer wonderful privacy. Staff kindly helped us move from Dewi to Umah Naga Master, which we wholeheartedly recommend. We estimated over 400 m² of indoor and outdoor space, including a sitting room, bedroom, enormous bathroom and a pool around 12 metres long. The spectacular view and sunshine until about 5.30 pm made afternoons there a highlight. The gardens are beautifully maintained, with candlelit paths creating a lovely evening atmosphere. Complimentary yoga twice a week combined a beautiful setting with skilled instructors. The inviting spa offered treatments at prices we found reasonable, and the hotel can arrange private excursions. For peace, privacy and personal service on Bali’s north coast, The Damai is a wonderful choice. We left feeling thoroughly spoiled and exceptionally well cared for. The people are the reason we would return.

We missed having a gym. For a hotel that places so much emphasis on wellness, yoga and healthy living, a small, well-equipped fitness room would be a natural addition. It would not need to be large, but somewhere to maintain an exercise routine would be a definite advantage. Several guests we spoke to felt the same. The villas would also benefit from a thorough maintenance review and some minor refurbishment. They are tasteful and welcoming, but signs of wear are noticeable in places: sticking doors, missing pool tiles, cupboards that do not close properly and other details that should be addressed at a hotel in this price bracket. Along with the high dinner prices, these were the main reasons we considered awarding four and a half stars.

The service was impecable! We stayed for two nights and had such a relaxing time, the food was very good as well. The views at night were incredibile.

This was our second visit to the Damai, we decided to upgrade to a garden pool villa, and it was absolutely worth it, lovely room in your own little private garden with your own pool. To top it of the staff was great and the food amazing.
