I would not recommend staying here. Thankfully we were hardly there as we were out in Bristol and just needed a bed for the night. The building itself is historic and the reception and bar area are pleasant but the overall first impression was spoilt somewhat by the childish halloween 'decorations' everywhere - it's a grown ups' hotel not student halls for goodness sake. Not very classy. The bed was comfortable and the linen good. The room was a good temperature for sleep. Its noisy from the road but that is to be expected from the location.
The room (120) was miles away from reception and the ropiest room imaginable - dark and dingy. Some other poor sap had been put in the room next door and our walls shook every time he moved. On arrival we had 20 mins to check in and change for our evening out so we just got on with it. We were with our grown-up daughter and she was placed in a room on the other side of the hotel which was better - not the end of the world but unnecessarily spiteful. Despite booking weeks ago, apparently there were no rooms together which I think was a fib as the place was like the grave (excuse the pun). Im starting to think hotels punish booking.com guests for not booking direct by doing this kind of thing on purpose. The shower controls were ancient and had clearly not been cleaned for a very long time also the cleaners woke us up by banging around in the corridor outside and slamming doors. In the evening we had a nightcap but this was somewhat spoilt by a rude, sweary man propping up the bar. The staff seemed to find him hilarious. Not very classy again. I emailed the manager on our return home to complain about the ghastly room and particularly the shower control but unsurprisingly I was told it was my fault for not complaining at the time..... Not sure what I was supposed to do actually - I didn't find the disgusting shower until the morning when I got up so maybe I should have walked down the endless corridors to reception in my towel and made a scene lol. You've been warned.
