The staff and location.
Very outdated decor. Pictures make it look nicer than it is. The fire alarm went off and whilst the man came quickly it seems this is a regular occurrence. No restaurant for dinner and lunch.

Lovely old fashioned hotel with big bedrooms (ours was anyway!). Great location and good parking.
Very small television in the room

The hotel itself is beautifully styled, with thoughtfully curated interiors, including a lovely billiards room and elegant sitting areas that create a luxurious first impression. The location is also excellent, within easy walking distance of town, and there is convenient parking at the rear of the property. The staff were one of the highlights of our stay. Everyone we encountered was friendly, upbeat and welcoming. They kindly offered to help with our luggage on arrival, which I was very grateful for once I realised our room was up two flights of stairs. However, we struggled managing our luggage ourselves on departure.
We had booked a Superior Double Room, but it felt rather small and cramped for the category. Being located in the eaves and accessed via multiple flights of stairs made it feel less premium than expected. There also seemed to be inconsistencies between rooms. For example, our room didn't have an iron or ironing board, while other guests appeared to have these already available. My partner had to go searching for them the evening before an event. Another limitation was the lack of evening dining facilities. For a hotel advertised as five-star, the absence of a restaurant at night felt like a notable omission. I'm also not sure what the "Spa" aspect of the hotel was, as it was neither mentioned by staff and another guest told me it was closed. The most disappointing aspect of our stay was an incident involving the fire alarm. Reception closes at 10pm, and when the alarm sounded throughout the hotel around midnight, there was no one available on-site to assist. The alarm continued for approximately 15 minutes. There was no phone in the room, so I had to contact the hotel via Booking.com to report the issue. Someone was eventually sent to switch it off, but by that point all the guests had been disturbed and left feeling rather wired. We were attending a wedding the following day, and I felt particularly sorry for another couple staying with a baby who were also affected.
