We were actually very happy with the apartment at the beginning of our stay, which makes what happened afterwards even more upsetting.
Unfortunately, our stay ended with a very serious burglary. The burglars entered the apartment with no signs of forced entry and stole approximately $40,000 worth of jewellery, watches, cash and personal belongings, including the entire safe. A police report was filed and all stolen items were declared to the police.
There were several aspects of the apartment’s security that were particularly concerning. The safe was not secured to a wall but simply screwed into a cabinet shelf, which allowed the burglars to unscrew it with a kitchen knife and remove the entire safe. I have photographic evidence of how it had been installed.
At the time we booked, the Booking.com listing also stated that the property had “24-hour security” and “security cameras in common areas”. I have a screenshot showing these features on the listing at the time of our stay. These references have since been removed from the listing.
There were no signs of forced entry. The landlord also told me verbally that works had previously been carried out in the apartment and that the locks had not subsequently been changed. I cannot say with certainty how the burglars obtained access, as this remains a matter for the authorities, but naturally the circumstances raised serious concerns for us.
I do want to give the landlord credit for accompanying me to the police following the burglary, which I appreciated at a very difficult moment. However, I was disappointed by what happened afterwards. To my knowledge, there was no meaningful follow-up with the contractors who had previously had access to the apartment and its keys, despite the unusual circumstances surrounding the entry.
I also tried repeatedly to resolve the matter amicably with the landlord. Considering the significant losses we suffered and the security issues we discovered, I had hoped he would take some responsibility and offer a reasonable gesture of compensation — at the very least, I would have expected our stay to be refunded.
