The Poppy House

Bishops Castle is a nice old town with lots of character. Antique shops and arty places provide interest. Poppy house is an old converted pub and right across the road from a Chinese takeaway. It is old with steep stairs but owned by the Castle Hotel which provides breakfasts if so so wish. We didn't. We went to see the scenery and you are near to Long Mynd walks, Powis castle and lots of historic places. We spent a day at Ironbridge which was a faster drive from the South than inner Shropshire. Recommended for a long weekend in October.

The town hall clock chimes every quarter of an hour, 24 hours a day. It is not too loud at Poppy House but light sleepers might need to use the earplugs helpfully provided. Otherwise, nothing not to like.

the water temperature for the shower was luke warm until later in the evening when it became hot. Stopped an early shower before going out for dinner.

Full of old country character. Right in middle of village so all walkable.

Beds way to soft, actually slid off bed during the night as edge of bed so soft.

Breakfast was at the Castle Hotel, and was excellent. Parking was also at the Hotel and was fine. The B&B is now run by the Hotel and we basically had to check in at the Hotel where they showed us to Poppy House literally round the corner. Everything was straightforward. The B&B was going through the early stages of redecoration and renovation, this was explained - and it was the reason for breakfast being at the Hotel. The Cafe within the B7B was being decorated. It's a quaint old build as are all the buildings in the centre of Bishop's Castle.

The accommodation was as expected. One slight gripe was that with three of us in a family room, we had three showers in quick succession before going to the Hotel for an evening meal, and we ran out of hot water for the last shower (which was mine). The other gripe is with Booking.com. I booked the room but wanted breakfast as well, which I couldn't book through Booking.com, the staff sorted us out with breakfast which we paid for on check out at the Hotel, but I will avoid Booking.com if possible in future as we might have had ended up with an unfavourable breakfast time, and this is the latest of a few problems with Booking.com - most of which have been significantly more annoying.
